On May 8, 2018, Sonam Kapoor and Anand Ahuja got married in Mumbai, India, the Bollywood capital of the world.

As Sonam Kapoor is someone who loves fashion, everyone was really excited to see her as a bride.

Given Sonam’s celebrity status, as soon as her wedding events began, social media was bombarded with photos, videos, and other juicy details of her wedding.

Everything from her outfits to jewelry including her mangalsutra was personalized. The outfits and jewelry reflected the personality of the couple.

Sonam was a simple and elegant bride with a charm and excitement to marry the man of her dreams.

In this article, I’ll share with you my research and insights on Sonam’s custom Mangalsutra including my take on her mangalsutra design and concept.

Sonam Kapoor Mangalsutra Design Concept

Mangalsutra is the holy thread that a groom ties the bride around her neck to protect the couple from evil and pass on good fortune.

Sonam came up with the overall concept and design for her mangalsutra. Jewelry designer Usheeta Rawtani made the final piece.

The idea here was to basically combine the zodiac signs of the bride and the groom as cute gold and diamond charms with a diamond solitaire in the center.

Sonam’s zodiac sign is Gemini and Anand Ahuja’s zodiac sign is a Leo. The mangalsutra charms were a symbolic representation of their sun signs coming together and becoming one with the diamond solitaire at its heart.

I really loved Sonam Kapoor’s mangalsutra concept.

The fact that celebrity brides such as Sonam are giving mangalsutra designs a serious thought is encouraging to see. Taking pride in being married and celebrating the beginning of a new life is a beautiful thing.

Designing Your Own Zodiac Custom Mangalsutra

After seeing Sonam Kapoor’s mangalsutra, you probably want to see how you can customize your very own mangalsutra based on your and your partner’s zodiac signs.

To inspire you, I’m about to share with you remarkable zodiac mangalsutra designs.

Similar to Sonam’s mangalsutra, you’ll first need to select your personalized diamond and gold zodiac chard. You can select any of combination of symbols to create your own unique mangalsutra.

Once you’ve picked the gold and diamond charms, you can decide if you want to have a center diamond solitaire.

Of course, it’s awesome to have a solitaire in the center of your mangalsutra. But if you’re on a budget, you can skip the solitaire completely or opt for an alternative to a solitaire.

Instead of a single large one-carat diamond, you can have princess and marquise diamonds fused together to give a solitaire-like look.

Personally, I find this option with the fused diamond setting instead of a single diamond to be an excellent choice. You get the real diamonds, an amazing solitaire-like look for a fraction of the cost.

As I mentioned earlier, the concept of Sonam’s zodiac mangalsutra was very interesting but I personally think that there was a lack of design. The two zodiac signs and the diamond in between somehow looked choppy and didn’t look cohesive.

Let’s explore design ideas that will give you a glimpse of mangalsutra design possibilities, which are truly endless. We’ll borrow Sonam’s mangalsutra concept to create our very own dream mangalsutra.

Zodiac Simple Mangalsutra

In this design, I wanted to create a very simple mangalsutra with zodiac signs that was elegant and timeless.

As you may know, an Indian wedding ceremony involves the couple each going around the holy fire. This ceremony marks the transition from two single people to a “happily married forever” couple bonded by love.

In this mangalsutra design, round diamond ring represents the circles that a couple takes around the holy fire and the two zodiacs of the couple on either side. The round geometric forms of the diamond ring and zodiac signs make this piece a very clean and elegant design.

The Zodiac Simple mangalsutra is handmade with 18K white gold and GIA quality 0.5-carat diamonds. Each diamond is G color or higher, VS clarity or better and excellent full cut. Available in yellow, white and rose gold. Starting price at USD 2300+

Zodiac Millennial Mangalsutra

This design is inspired by Sonam Kapoor’s zodiac mangalsutra and our very own Millenial Collection.

In this design, I’ve combined two zodiac signs really close to the center cluster of diamonds. The idea here is that once a couple is married, they are close to one another, bonded by the thread of love.

The zodiacs are designed in an organic way to show the zodiac sign clearly. Four marquise and one princess cut diamonds are fused together to give a solitaire-like look.

The Zodiac Millennial mangalsutra is handmade with 18K white gold and GIA quality 0.5 carat diamonds. Each diamond is G color or higher, VS clarity or better and excellent full cut. Available in yellow, white and rose gold. Starting price at USD 2500+

 

Zodiac Ethos Mangalsutra

The Zodiac Ethos mangalsutra is designed keeping in mind the modern bride. Ethos basically means the guiding beliefs of a person.

This piece is designed for someone who believes in Zodiac signs and would like to incorporate in their mangalsutra. It includes three rounds motif, each with individual zodiacs and center with a cluster of diamonds. It’s perfect geometry makes it very modern to look at.

The beauty of this piece is the fact that it’s difficult to tell that the two gold rounds have zodiac signs in it.

The Zodiac Ethos mangalsutra is handmade with 18K yellow gold and GIA quality 0.3-carat diamonds. Each diamond is G color or higher, VS clarity or better and excellent full cut. Available in yellow, white and rose gold. Starting price at USD 2100+.

Zodiac Charm Mangalsutra 

Zodiac Charm mangalsutra is a more of a playful design with the actual zodiac symbols dangling from the chain.

To give this piece a more balanced look visually, we added two more diamond charms to add extra sparkle and design to it. I find this option really interesting for a bride that loves to experiment and try new things.

Since the two zodiac symbols are for the couple, the four-diamond charms are for the parents of bride and groom. This idea comes from the belief that a wedding is just not between the couples but it’s the merger of two families that promise to take care of each other in good times and bad.

Zodiac Lovestruck Mangalsutra

Zodiac Lovestruck mangalsutra is for a couple that is deeply in love.

I wanted to incorporate the little diamond hearts in form of charms and the center zodiac pendant a fusion of two zodiac signs placed on top of each other to form a more linear pattern.

The symbols are made with diamonds, together they look like one combined pattern.

I love this design as the zodiac signs are ambiguous and hidden in a creative way. This is what makes the piece more personalized and custom.

This mangalsutra is inspired by our Unity Mangalsutra. It’s simple and 24” long which makes it a versatile choice for Indian brides.  Instead of having black beads all the way around, this has only a few beads in the hangings making it extremely modern and elegant. You can wear this to work or party with confidence and pride.

Zodiac Constellation Mangalsutra

Zodiac Constellation mangalsutra is inspired by the star constellations for every sign. The idea behind this is to have simple zodiac constellation signs as two charms connected by a heart-shaped charmed.

Extremely dainty and a pretty design made with gold and tiny diamonds that represent the stars in the constellation. No matter what zodiac you are, you can customize this piece accordingly.
