You read it right, we are asking you to ditch fake, also known as costume jewelry. There are many good reasons to adorn fake jewelry, key reason being that it is relatively inexpensive.
We want to share with you 9 reasons why we believe costume jewelry may not be the right choice for you.
1. Fad and Not Permanent
Costumer jewelry can be attractive and mimic the recent fashion trends. It might even perfectly match your outfit. But as you and I both know, fashion trend evolve with time. Like clothes, you will soon be looking for change in a few short years.
Yes, jewelry can be toxic. The lead, chromium, nickel, cadmium and other nasty stuff in fake jewelry can cause allergic reactions. Cheap jewelry can also break easily and a child can accidentally eat the toxic piece.
When the costume jewelry fad fades away, you are likely to donate your jewelry to Goodwill or it may end up in your trash can. Costume jewelry and it’s toxic chemicals ultimately end up in the landfill.
4. Mass Manufactured
We believe jewelry is an expression of love and art and should be handmade. Thousands of costume jewelry pieces are mass manufactured everyday, making every piece identical to each other. There is no uniqueness, love or care in mass manufacturing.
5. You cannot pass it onto generations
Do you own a piece of jewelry that reminds you of your grandparents? The beauty of fine jewelry is that it will live past our lifetime. We can pass it on to the next generation for them to enjoy in years to come.
6. You spend more money over time
Say on an average you spend $50 per piece of costume jewelry and you are spending annually $500. For the same price or less, you can get one piece of fine jewelry that will last your lifetime and beyond. And don’t forget, the precious metals and stones still have financial value.
7. Memories and stories to cherish
Fine jewelry is generally purchased or gifted for a special occasion. And with every piece of jewelry come emotions, love and joy. Fine jewelry is something you will cherish forever.
8. Makes you look like everyone else
Have you noticed that in stores like Target and Forever 21, where racks are filled with several pieces of identical pieces of jewelry? Costume jewelry is generally mass produced in order to make it more affordable and accessible. But that also makes jewelry generic.
9. Healing effect
Natural gemstones and metals are known to have therapeutic and healing properties. The science behind this is beyond the scope of this article. But if you are someone who believes in the healing effect, you won’t experience it with costume jewelry.
